Academy Sailing founders Andrew and Kathryn

Academy Sailing was founded by Andrew and Kathryn and is an RYA recognised sailing school based in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex. We share a deep passion for sailing and a commitment to delivering outstanding instruction. We’re proud to be the only yacht sailing school in Essex with official Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accreditation, as RYA training is the recognised gold standard.

Our aim is simple: to make your experience with us unforgettable. We truly care about your enjoyment - because happy clients return and recommend us. That’s why we invest in a team of award-winning instructors, offering them exceptional terms to retain their expertise and enthusiasm. It’s also why we maintain Dream Odyssey with the utmost care.

Dream Odyssey – Academy Sailing’s Training Yacht

We get asked what it's like aboard the Academy Sailing yacht Dream Odyssey, so we want to provide you with a bit of an insight here.

Dream Odyssey is a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 39i Performance: a modern, well-equipped yacht designed for speed and comfort thanks to its deeper keel and larger rig.

She is designed to provide comfort whether you’re here for a training course or one of our sailing holidays. With four large, heated cabins and a cosy saloon and galley, she offers restful accommodation and a sociable atmosphere—even in less-than-ideal weather, thanks to her fully enclosed cockpit and central heating. Solar panels, a wind generator, inverter, and high-capacity batteries ensure we have more than enough onboard power.

The yacht is fully equipped with advanced navigation gear, plus a bow‑thruster, which is ideal for teaching close-quarters docking and manoeuvring. Safety is paramount: on board we provide premium Gill Gore‑Tex sailing jackets and salopettes, alongside top-tier Crewsaver lifejackets.

​Food & Hospitality

 

We believe that great sailing deserves great food. That’s why Dream Odyssey is stocked with fresh ingredients, and Kathryn (affectionately Mrs B) often bakes homemade treats—everything from spiced squash soup to brownies and bread. Meals are freshly prepared onboard and never go to waste.
