Manoeuvring a yacht in close proximity to other boats can be tricky at times, but especially when the wind really gets up!
A few days ago Andy Barnes, our Chief Instructor, provided us with a blog article on flotilla holidays. One of our customers who did his RYA Competent Crew and RYA Day Skipper courses with Andy sent us a video from a flotilla sailing holiday he went on shortly after getting his Day Skipper qualification.
The footage is great and shows some really tricky conditions - we are told gusts of 30 to 40 knots so things were tricky. But the staff were ready to jump on board to help park the boats.
In this video look at the speed of the boat - it's really quick - and this is especially obvious when the boat gets close to the concrete dock! This is definitely not a high-speed manoeuvre that should be attempted without plenty of experience as this can go wrong really quickly.
But flotilla captain Lottie Wade nails it and having the skills uses the speed to maintain boat direction in rather strong cross-winds.
Academy Sailing runs pre-flotilla holiday skills days for people to make sure they are confident about their holiday, and whilst things getting this breezy isn't too common, it’s good to know that this help is always on hand to make sure you have a safe time at the same time as having great fun. Good skills on show here so enjoy the video.
